Undergraduate Research Symposium

Information for Faculty and Staff

Introduction to Symposium participant.

The Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium provides an opportunity for Iowa State University to showcase and celebrate the mentored research of our most highly-motivated undergraduate students through oral presentations at faculty-moderated sessions. Though coordinated by the University Honors Program, all undergraduate students are eligible and encouraged to participate, and we hope to see a wide range of disciplines represented.

Students wishing to make presentations are asked to submit abstracts (up to 200 words) signed by their mentors. We hope that mentors will review these abstracts carefully and help assure that they meet appropriate professional standards. Mentors will be listed along with their students and abstracts in the Symposium program. Mentors will be invited to the Symposium luncheon and are encouraged to attend their students' presentations. The Honors program will organize pre-Symposium workshops to help students prepare their fifteen minute oral presentations, which must be supported by PowerPoint.

Faculty and staff are invited and encouraged to:

  • Invite students currently engaged in mentored research to present their work at the Symposium
  • Review submitted abstracts and moderate Symposium sessions. If you are interested in serving as a reviewer and/or session moderator, please contact Dana Schumacher dschumac@iastate.edu, the Symposium Coordinator.
  • Attend the Symposium events
  • Urge students not yet engaged in research to attend the Symposium to learn more about the nature and scope of undergraduate research taking place at ISU
